GINGER PROCESSING FOR EXPORT:

Nigeria is abundantly blessed with both human and material resources. Our problem stems from misplaced priorities, mismanagement and neglect of our God-given resources.

Ginger is a root crop, which grows abundantly in Nigerian soil. It has various local names such as: Chitta in Hausa, Ose Ala in Ibo and Ita Ile in Yoruba Language.

Nigeria is one of the world’s greatest producers of ginger. Other includes: India, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Jamaica and West Indies. In Nigeria, ginger grows very well in Kaduna, Plateau and Nassarawa States. It also grows abundantly in Sokoto, Kano, Akwa Ibom, Ondo and Lagos State.

Ginger is known to possess certain properties which easily recommend it for use in the food processing and pharmaceutical industries. It is also used in the soft drink industry.

Processed ginger is therefore widely used in the meat industry, especially in suya, fried meat, chips and pies etc.

It is also used in the preparation of stews, soups (especially pepper-soup) pottages, jollof rice and vegetable salad, etc). Ginger is also employed in the preparation of biscuits, special cakes as well as in the making of candies and marmalades.

World demand for ginger is very high. The major importers of this product include: the United kingdom (UK), United States (US), Russia, Canada, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Czech and Slovak Republic. Others include Somalia and Singapore.

Ginger is a perennial plant though; it can be cultivated on an annual basis, especially for export purposes.

The export of processed ginger can be done both on small and large scale through shipping to the importers though post office, courier companies like DHL, UPS or Sea Port depending on the capital at hand.

A ton of ginger is sold for N76,000 (Lagos Price). This quantity can be bought at a very reduced price, if the prospective exporter can go to the main sources of the product.

The same quantity is sold for 1,000 US Dollar (processed) on the international market. However, the exporter can buy and ship less than a ton through Post Office, DHL, UPS and so on.

PEPPERS PROCESSING FOR EXPORT:
Pepper like ginger is cultivated in many parts of West Africa; it is mostly cultivated on a small-scale and intercropped with other crops. Pepper is usually grown on rich well-drained loamy soil under a moderate rainfall. They are usually grown mainly for domestic consumption. However, high quality and processed peppers have become good export commodities. Pepper can be found across the country. It can also be bought from our local markets; this makes the sourcing of this commodity very cheap and easy. For example, it can be sourced from most of our local markets in Lagos – Ido market, mile 12, and so on. Prospective exporters however can source this product in villages and bush markets where it is very cheap in order to maximize profit.

The shipping out of processed pepper can also be on either small or large scale through Post office, DHL or Sea Port according to the capital at hand to UK, US, Germany, Greece etc.

A bag of 10kg is sold for N5,000, 40kg bag is sold for N15,000 depending on the type of pepper and source of buying. While a kilo is sold for 23 US Dollar (processed) on the export market.

Ginger and pepper export businesses are very profitable, but it cannot be done successfully without the exporter knowing the cheapest and best sources of the products packaging, international specifications, export documents, shipping procedures and so on.
